Soft Wash vs. Pressure Wash: What's the Difference?

One of the most common questions we get from property owners across DFW is: "What’s the difference between soft washing and pressure washing, and which one do I need?" It’s a great question — and the answer actually matters a lot if you want to protect your property while getting the best possible result.

The Core Difference

Both methods use water to clean exterior surfaces. The difference is in how they clean:

When to Use Pressure Washing

Pressure washing is the right tool for hard, durable surfaces that can withstand the force without being damaged:

For concrete driveways in particular, pressure washing is highly effective at removing oil stains, tire marks, and years of embedded grime that softer methods simply can’t touch.

When to Use Soft Washing

Soft washing is the right tool for surfaces that can be damaged by high pressure — and for situations where you need to treat the root cause of the problem, not just clean the surface:

The key advantage of soft washing over pressure washing for organic growth (mold, algae, mildew) is that the cleaning solution kills the organism at the root. Pressure washing the same surface without treatment just removes the visible growth — the roots stay behind and regrow within weeks.

The Roof Question

This is where the difference really matters. Never use pressure washing on asphalt shingles. High-pressure water strips the granules from shingles — those granules are your roof’s UV protection and weatherproofing. Removing them significantly shortens your roof’s lifespan. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association specifically recommends low-pressure washing for roof cleaning.

Soft washing a roof with the right chemical solution — typically a sodium hypochlorite blend — removes black algae streaks, moss, and lichen safely and keeps them from regrowing for 1–3 years.
